At a time when calls are being made for help to control pests in the Kaimai Ranges, a film that deals with 1080 poison drops is being shown in Tauranga.
Poisoning Paradise: Ecocide New Zealand is a two hour documentary made by Clyde and Steve Graf which is screening at Baycourt Theatre on Thursday September 24.
The Graf brothers are the film-makers who were responsible for an earlier 1080 documentary called A Shadow Of Doubt which screened on Maori Television two years ago.
The documentary includes interviews with farmers and hunters who have witnessed the results of 1080 drops and contains some footage of animals that have been poisoned with the chemical.
New Zealand has been using 1080 for around 30 years now and is currently the biggest user of the poison in the world, accounting for 85 per cent of the world's production.
The screening is being sponsored by the Bay of Plenty branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association. Admission is just $10 and after immediate costs have been covered, BOP Deerstalkers president Dean Maisey says any left over takings will be donated to local conservation projects.
'It is a private screening, but the public is welcome to come along and find out the other side of the story, the one they don't usually hear.”
Doors open at 7pm and the film will start at about 7.30pm after which the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions of Clyde and Steve Graf who will be present. Copies of the DVD will also be available for purchase on the night.
