Night market left in the dark

The Kiwi Night Market in Tauranga City is not going ahead tonight due to issues with Tauranga City Council, say organisers.

The Kiwi Night Market is not going ahead tonight.

The market has been running every Saturday night at the Elizabeth Street car park since its inaugural opening on August 31. But organisers are not running the market tonight due to what they claim is a run-in with TCC.

While organisers did not want to go into too much detail about the issues, they say the market is not going ahead tonight.

Until they hear back from TCC, organisers say they are unsure if the community event can continue.

TCC could not be contacted today.

Good old TCC

Typical of TCC, let's see how many barriers they can put in place to stop people trying to do something

Any EMs know anything ...

Any Elected Members know anything? It appears it has run successfully for a number of times, been enjoyed by the public and valued by the traders. What has changed? On a personal positive note, can't blame me!

TCC again

Looks like anything good TCC will move to wipe it out. I would think TCC have sent them a huge bill at TCC pay rates (3-4 times higher than real) and expect to be paid, of course that then makes it unaffordable in the real world.

Sign of things to come?

TCC turning out the lights for us all.

TCC can't be contacted today?

'TCC can't be contacted today' should read, 'TCC chose not to respond' or 'TCC require 5 days notice'. It is unacceptable that a media outlet, the community, cannot be informed, secure feedback on an issue 'as it arises'. Key staff , the Mayor, Deputy Mayor all have cell phones, all have email!

Wow yet another example of Council bureaucracy doing local businesses and residents no favors. Come on councilors get your fingers out and stop this B.S on local business. You have managed to kill off the city center with no parking, God know what will happen this summer with the influx of tourists, and sent your jobsworth parking wardens to piss off visitors to the Tauranga Saturday market which all your ratepayers love and now bugger up the night market to boot! Might just have well voted in a lot of Zombies onto council as nothing has changed!

Perhaps needed more process or consultation, Mr Guy?

We can only speculate on the reason/s for the night market not opening. But Council is a bureaucracy and in my opinion even former councillor Guy was fond of the right processes, policy and zonings being used. Maybe a carpark isn't a place zoned to sell stuff or maybe the whole of Tauranga has to be given the chance to object first. I'm beginning to see little difference between this council or the previous.

Throw em out

Now I'm convinced its not elected members running the city, we chucked out the last lot, must be the control freaks inside. I wonder if Parks has anything to do with this, Perhaps its a land use consent issue..

Councilors

They would have read about it in the paper like the rest of us, yes some official on a hungry power tripping head swell session. Murray, I like the idea of "5 days notice" required, of course any less then they feel like they are being ambushed, can not have time to create an answer to smooth it all over and goes away. Add to that not even Councilors can now raise the issue, have to put it on the agenda and talk about it in 5 days .. oh I mean next month.

Nothing's changed

Once again the council has displayed ineptitude towards encouraging creative enterprise in the community! The continuing policy seems to be one of "let's give it a trial and then kill it with bureaucracy and money grubbing greed." Is it little wonder that Tauranga has trouble developing a positive image with the so-called "city fathers" helping foster creativity? Sadly, the council appears to have made no progress towards its trumpeted new image - just the the same old rhetoric and actions.
