‘Otumoetai women win their Intercity Hockey semi-final, while the men's game between Mt Maunganui and Otumoetai goes to the wire in the Intercity play-off.'
Premier Women:
Otumoetai 3 (Tambra McGarvey, Aimee Rossiter, Dani Maunder) Te Awamutu 1 (Alia Jaques) HT 2-0. Semi-final played at Tauranga Hockey Centre. In contrast to their match against University last week, Otumoetai were always in control in this semi-final and dominated Te Awamutu, despite the fact that their opponents included former international Robbie Matthews in their line-up. Otumoetai scored from a penalty corner deflection in the 25th minute, then again from some attractive passing five minutes later. A few minutes into the second half fleet-footed Alia Jaques pegged one back for Te Awamutu but that was cancelled out by another team goal from Otumoetai finished by Dani Maunder. Tambra McGarvey's skilful dribbling set up a number of Otumoetai's attacks. Otumoetai will meet Waikato University in the Intercity women's final at the Tauranga Hockey Centre next Saturday afternoon.
Waikato University 3 (Chloe Penwarden, Jess Bagley, Victoria McCullough) Rotorua Aces 1 (Mihi Waaka), HT 1-0. Played at Hamilton. The other semi-final saw a win for University over previous Intercity champions Aces from Rotorua.
Fraser Tech 6 Papakura 2, HT 4-1. Played at Hamilton.
Premier Men:
Pukekohe Indians 4 Thames Valley 1, HT 3-0. Semi-final played at Pukekohe. Pukekohe Indians led all the way in a repeat of their section-play triumph last week over Thames Valley and the result sees the 2008 champions relegated to the play-off for third place.
Fraser Tech 6 (Hugo Inglis 3, Zac Woods, Owen Mitai-Wells, Nick Ross) Waikato University 4 (Tony Hopping 3, Tony Broadbent) HT 3-0. Semi-final played at Hamilton. This high scoring match resulted in a win for the young Fraser-Tech team and secured a berth in the Intercity men's final next Saturday against Pukekohe Indians at Pukekohe.
Mt Maunganui 2 (Dave Henderson, Lincoln Churchill) Otumoetai 2 (Manu Singh, Jono Simmonds), HT 1-2, Mount won penalty-stroke shoot-out 5-3. Played at the Tauranga Hockey Centre. The Mount struggled to dominate Otumoetai in this play-off match and turned at the break one goal behin. They continued to squander possession with poorly directed passes in the second half until they levelled with 15 minutes to go. Otumoetai's goalie Gareth Stewart kept out waves of Mount attack in the final quarter and the match had to be decided by a penalty stroke competition. Mt Maunganui will progress to play Hamilton Old Boys in the 5th place play-off next week at Tauranga.
Hamilton Old Boys 5 Suburbs-Piako 1, HT 3-1. Played at Hamilton.
Tauranga Old Boys 5, Kohekohe 4, HT 4-1. Played at Tauranga Hockey Centre. Old Boys will meet Rotorua Aces in the 9th place play-off next Saturday at Tauranga.
Rotorua Aces 5 Onewhero-Pukekohe 2, HT 2-1. Played at Rotorua.
