Shark sightings at Waihi Beach

A third shark sighting at Waihi Beach in the last week is being described as 'a bit irregular” by lifeguards at the holiday hot spot, despite not closing the beach to holidaygoers.

Yesterday's shark, believed to be about 2 metres long, was seen heading north from Three Mile Creek at Waihi Beach, about 20 metres from the high-tide mark in the afternoon, according to police.

Trust Waikato Waihi Beach Lifeguard Service patrol captain Morgan Sloog says lifeguards did not see the shark itself with reports coming from a member of the public of what could have been a shadow.

He says lifeguards and police advised beachgoers of the sighting, but the patrol area was not closed down.

'It was more just warning people in that area but the flags were never closed,” says Morgan.

He says shark sightings along the beach have been scarce as of late, but three in a week is unusual.

'Not many sightings have happened over the last few seasons, so yeah it's a bit irregular.”

This is the third sighting of a shark in the area after one was also spotted at the north end of the beach on Christmas Eve, forcing swimmers to exit the water.

A shark had also been seen near the shore on Sunday afternoon.

Morgan says there has been a steady flow of people on the beach in the last few days and is expecting numbers to swell now that the Christmas period is finished.

He urges members of the public to continue reporting any sightings or information they have about the sharks.

Was fishing at the marina today. Got one hell of a pull on my line then nothing. Reeled in my line and it had been bitten clean in half. At the end of the day that's where they live.

Maybe if your cow was a possible threat to life and limb? Or standing in waste deep water...

@yikes61 - good one! There was an unleashed dog at the beach yesterday; I escaped to safety by swimming out to sea.

Not unusual

It's not out of the ordinary for sharks to be swimming close to shore this time of year. See them often when out surfing. They're curious, yet harmless. If they wanted to eat someone, you'd be in its jaws before you even see it coming.

These sharks must be looking for some fresh meat so better beware and do not get too close to them

Lets scare some tourists

Wow, here we go again, lets scare away the tourists and bugger up local businesses again. These Bronze Whalers have been around for hundreds of years off all of the North Island beaches without a single problem, they are just a big fish swimming around where it just happens to live. Guaranteed next week the local BOP newspaper will have its annual January monster man eating sharks sighted off the Mount Beaches to try and sell a few more rubbish newspapers. If you ran a story about 2 meter long Snapper sighted off BOP beaches we could even attract more tourists not scare them away!! and all have a good laugh

Bloody hell part III

Those that post the biggest threat to life and limb are not sharks, worldwide they just take a wee nibble of a handful of people annually. Those that do most harm across the board are those who think they "do good" with the lives, income and so on of others yet seem to be self serving in results. City Hall is but one obvious example.
