Michael James Cooney – services to the community (member of the NZ order of merit)
Michael says it is certainly humbling to be nominated for to be made a member of the NZ Order of merit and is blown away by the supplied list of activities he has been involved in.
Michael Cooney.
The Cooney Lees Morgan consultant holds a number of commercial and property clients and has an extensive portfolio of community interests.
He is a Director of TrustPower, Chair of the Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust and for thirty years served as Tauranga's coroner.
He is, or has been, involved in many other community, educational and church organisations and coached local sports teams.
In 2010, Rotary International recognised Michael's outstanding community service by awarding him a Paul Harris Fellowship.
'There is a pretty wide range of activities and as you appreciate a wide range of activities gives me an insight into the Tauranga community and to see so many selfless people giving to the development of Tauranga it's humbling that I get recognised and they don't,” says Michael.
Sheryl Dawson – services to netball (member of the NZ order of merit)
The former Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic chief executive admits to being a bit speechless with the whole nomination after being involved with the sport she loves since first picking up a netball at the age of five.

Sheryl Dawson.
'To be honest I was feeling overwhelmed to be even considered and then feel extremely overwhelmed and humbled at the same; it's quite an amazing thing to happen,” says Sheryl.
Sheryl was involved with the Magic since 2002 when she was invited by the Board to assist with business development.
Having moved from Chief executive to marketing manager for 2008 she then returned to the role of chief executive between 2012 and 2012.
A former Secondary School Associate Principal Sheryl took leave in 1998 to run the Vodafone World Netball Championships in 1999 in Christchurch.
She then became the International Federation of Netball Associations President and Board Chair for four years from 1999 to 2003.
A former representative player, coach and NNZ Umpire she began focusing on administration in 1989 when she was appointed to the Netball New Zealand Board and remained until 1999. Over that time she contributed to IFNA as the NNZ delegate.
Speaking on the achievement, Sheryl believes netball is a 'wonderful” game that often contributes far more than just the development of women on the court.
'I've seen it become a stepping stone for young women to go on and do incredible things and I think that's what makes it such an incredible game.
'It's a sport that often allows young women to discover themselves and make a better contribution amongst their communities and their families. It's a game that helps people become even more special than they could have been.”
Richard Cashmore – services to business, sport and the community (Queens service medal)
The managing director and chairman of Realty Services which owns Tauranga Bayleys admits the letter arriving in the mail came as a 'total surprise”.

Richard Cashmore.
'It is obviously a thrill and I feel embarrassed because there are so many other people in the community that do so much; I hope they got one as well,” adds Richard.
Richard's medal is awarded services to three fields within the community rather than one, something he sees in equal lights.
Chairman of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union for five years and Bay of Plenty Golf for three years along with a successful career in realty, his achievement are on the back of a number of people not just himself.
'I don't think I have done anything special and I have had so many great people around me.”
Janice Lewis – services to New Zealand Police and women's health (Queens service medal)

Such a great person who has given enormous service to Netball NZ over her lifetime. A VERY well deserved honour to a great Kiwi woman.

While I am sure there are a number of very deserving recipients for the higher Honours, each year I am surprised at the increasing number of Honours and the number that are for "services to" rather obscure things. Unless more care is taken in 'shortlisting' nominees the recognition will become a so-what which is not fair to truly deserving recipients.

How do these people get selected or is it a lucky draw in the weetbix packet. I'm sure lots are deserving of the award but can guarantee most are well paid for their services and wouldn't be doing it if they weren't.
