Teen injured in Taupo crash

A teenager is in Waikato Hospital with multiple injuries following a serious crash on State Highway 1 near Taupo this morning.

The male driver of one of the cars involved in the two car crash at Moututere was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition by the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter.

Pilot Nat Every says the man is suspected to have multiple broken bones and internal injuries in the crash that happened just before 8am.

The teen, along with the driver of the other car, were initially trapped. Both were extricated by emergency services at the scene.

The other driver was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital by the Baytrust Rescue Helicopter in a serious condition.

Police serious crash unit was called to the scene, along with St John Ambulance and firefighters.

The highway was closed for a number of hours while emergency services were at the scene.
