Cafe discussion on Kaituna

The re-diversion of the Kaituna River and the Maketu wetland creation projects are the subject of discussion at Tauranga's first Café Scientifique for 2014.

Tauranga's first Cafe Scientifique for 2014 will take place on Monday February 10.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council project manager Pim de Monchy will present the council's proposal for re-diversion, and the associated assessment of environmental effects at Tauranga's first Cafe Scientifique of the year – on Monday, February 10, at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

The regional council intends re-diverting almost a quarter of the river's flow back through the estuary in an effort to restore the salt marsh, which has declined since 1956 when almost all of the river's flow was diverted – as a flood protection measure – through Ford's Cut at the present Kaituna River mouth.

Restoring the estuarine flow is predicted to improve the estuary's health and create more suitable conditions for a range of shellfish and fish species; and may reduce the rate at which sand fills in the estuary.

Café Scientifique is a forum for discussing science issues, where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. The Café Scientifique series is organised by Julia and Warren Banks, and supported by the University of Waikato. It aims to promote public engagement and make science accessible.

The regional council project team will take any feedback provided by Café Scientifique attendees, and include it as part of the pre-consent consultation process.

Entry is $5 and refreshments are provided. For more information, please visit: www.waikato.ac.nz/go/cafescientifique or email: [email protected]
