A strong team of Mount Maunganui surf lifesavers snared an historic win at the Eastern Region junior championships on their home beach during the weekend.
Big surf meant Saturday's racing was confined to Pilot Bay, with 13 clubs from around the North Island competing, but improved conditions for Sunday's older age-groups saw racing continue on Mount Main Beach.

It didn't slow down the host team, as they raced away to a comfortable win, taking out the event – ending with Grand Cameron relays to seal a 31-point margin over second-placed Omanu.
It's the first time any club has held the Eastern Region senior, junior and masters titles at the same time, with Mount chairman Paul Treanor being delighted by the achievement.
'We've had a golden era in the senior ranks over the last few years, but to see the rise of our junior and masters athletes has been really inspiring,” says Paul.
'This is our first win in the Eastern Region junior champs; and it's something the whole club can be proud of.
Paul says the club's juniors get to rub shoulders with the senior athletes on a regular basis, while many of the senior athletes help with coaching the juniors.
'We're really seeing that start to pay off, both in terms of the competition results and also the quality and preparedness of these children as they progress through to the qualified lifeguard ranks and start patrolling the beaches.”
The Mount club finished the two-day carnival on 187 points, while Omanu achieved 156 points, Papamoa 120, Whangamata 102 and Whakatane 65, rounding out the top-five.
Paul says the event was great preparation for next week's four-day Oceans 14 New Zealand under-14 championships in Mount Maunganui, with nearly 900 junior athletes expected to compete.
Mount Maunganui's honour role this season includes the Bay of Plenty championships in Whakatane, a massive 129-point win at the senior ERCs and their comprehensive masters' success last month. A number of senior athletes are competing in this weekend's Northern Region championships in Ruakaka; the final big carnival before next month's national championships in Whakatane.
