Going bald for a good cause

More than $39,000 has been raised for the Child Cancer Foundation thanks to the efforts of those involved in the Mount Beach Bald event at the Mount Action Centre.

About 38 people including a two-year-old boy and a 67-year-old woman, had their heads shaved, in an effort to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation.

Fundraising and business development manager Delwynne Hahunga says despite ex Tropical Cyclone Lusi forcing them to move the event inside, the day has been great.

'It's been amazing. It's a little bit damp outside thanks to Cyclone Lusi, she brought the wet weather and we weren't able to have the event on the beach.

'Apart from that, it's been a really great day.”

She says this is their third annual event and the first time they've had to do it in an inside venue.

'Even though it has been indoors, it has been a great success. People have been fantastic.

'The money raised will directly support our local children and their families. It will be helping them with a family support coordinator, we send them on camps, and we provide for whatever needs they may have throughout their journey.”

Delwynne says Charlie, the Pomeranian who was ravaged by a German Shepard three months ago, has had a hand in helping fundraise by helping out at street appeals and at the Tauranga Home Show in previous years.
