Mount Maunganui band Mosaic Music are celebrating after their new album went straight to the top of the New Zealand iTunes charts.

You Surround hit No.1 on the overall charts about eight hours after it was released on April 6.

The album features a collection of original songs performed by 10 members of Mosaic Music's larger musical community.

The album, which currently sits in second place on the official NZ music charts, is a collaboration from members of Mosaic Church inspired by the group's relationship with God, and his ongoing presence surrounding their lives, says a press release from the band.

A follow up to their 2009 album The First and Me, the band says You Surround has been well received by churches around New Zealand looking for a modern take on songs of praise and worship.

Although chart success was not the group's motivation, songwriter, Si Hayward, has been pleasantly surprised with the positive response to their music.

"It's been quite humbling to think that for such a niche genre, the album has done so well on the open iTunes charts. Writing and recording has never been about charts or even sales for us, but it's nice to know that our music is being received really well."

The band will be performing music from You Surround at various churches and camps in the coming months, with one of the highlights being Easter camp at Mystery Creek on April 17.
