Gate Pa road closures slammed

Enforcement of the road closure at the Battle of Gate Pa site in Cameron Road are being slammed by a local resident for making a woman and young child make a long walk in pouring rain in the dark, to her parents' house in Burns Street.

Burns Street runs parallel to Cameron Road and is accessed from St George Street, directly opposite the Gate Pa reserve.

Cameron Road, from St George Street and Munro Road, was closed yesterday for the 150 year commemoration of the Battle of Gate Pa.

'My daughter couldn't even bring our grandson to our place,” says Neville McKay.

Instead she had to drive around the road block and down to Watling Street, park the car and walk about half a kilometre up the alleyway connecting Watling Street with St George Street.

'That was at 6.45am,” says Neville.

'They would not let her through. They didn't even know where Burns Street or St George Street were. She couldn't even come into our street.”

He rang the council to complain and was put on an answer phone.

Neville's daughter works at Bayfair and drops her seven-year-old son off at her parents every morning.

Tauranga City Council say an apology has been made to Mr McKay.

'We are very sorry that Mr McKay's daughter was turned away from the cordon this morning,” says a statement released today.

'The wardens are supposed to let people through who have business or reside in the area but there seems to have been a misunderstanding with these instructions. Organisers have reiterated these instructions with wardens and they all have maps of the area.”

Maori Wardens regional office spokesperson Tina Drummond says the Maori wardens were working alonside other servies during the time of the road closures.

"Maybe she got herself a little confused about who it was that turned her away as our uniforms are very simialr.

"Our guys were very much up with the play as to where the road closures were and everything else. we knew exactly who to let through and who not to let through."

disaster

again council has no idea on how to run an event, Fraser st was a nightmare the Expressway should have been free for the day at no cost, why send cars down an already full road while others could be moving in the other direction, answer radio communication and common sense, the time factor in this event was inconsiderate to the rest of the 1,000s that had to use other routes, so hence this event should have only been completed in a short timeframe...............

Fantastic event, stop complaining

Awesome job done by those who were involved in the event. It is great to have something so impressive happening in our community. People have known about this event for weeks. It was one day. Plan ahead and don't go complaining to the media when things don't go your way. They were doing their jobs, I am not sure if you talked reasonably to them but you may have been able to talk your way around it.

Couldn't be helped

hahahaha.....someone had to have a moan.....what you fail to see is those same wardens stood out there in the rain, wind, sun and cold and not once did they complain, and now thanks to whoever you are, you have given a negative perspective to what was a great day yesterday......really? walking 500 metres to your parents house caused you that much distress? OMG you would be catastrophic in a disaster...the moaners from hell....and why the council felt they had to apologise is beyond me....get a life.....mana tu mana toa mana ake ake

Really

Sorry Sunlive, but I am surprised you even gave this airtime. Given the advertising in the local area it is not hard to change for one day. Lets be fair, there was an entire shopping centre and incomes more affected than this one person and they all agreed and made allowance for a founding event of our city. Given the positive community involvement and worlwide recognition it is a shame to mar a great event by one. Capt_Kaveman, living up to your name. Get over yourself. This is a community based event that I felt was well organised and executed. We know more of others history than our own, maybe it is time this changed.

Overit

When I got to the lights on Cameron Rd/Courtney Rd yesterday around 2pm, the Police had everyone going right-we ended up on Chadwick Rd.I wanted to go to MegaMitre.I should have been given the option to go left and I would have been able to go to the Shopping Centre behind New World off Courtney Rd. So I came back down Cameron Rd, told the Maori Warden what had happened and he let me go through. I parked my car opposite Gilmores and walked the rest of the way.On my return I had a bag of 4 trays of vege seedlings and a 10mtr roll of wire netting.A little inconvenient but I coped. My beef is with the Police.

Yes people have known about the event for weeks but that is no excuse for people being put out.Not all of Tauranga agreed with the event or the funding of it.

Really it's common sense TGA had been advised by different media's of this commemoration. It would have been a logictical night-mare to pull something as big as this off the logicial team done themselves proud. The person in question should and could have made other arrangements, it's not that they didn't know about this. I wonder did the complainant go join in with the commemoration as I hear there was plenty children there? Congratulations to all that was involved in this historial occasion. I'm sure the community generated a good income from this day.

what the hell? you live in gate pa Neville you received a letter 4-6 weeks ago stating the road would be closed!!! everyone else got over it. Stop whining about everything and trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. you should have had your grandson the night before and maybe even taken him to celebrate 150yrs since the battle. He may have learnt something other than crying to the media just because him and his mum got wet lol

Really?

Well I live within the road closure zone, and one of the wardens told me I couldn't go up there too. I said, "I am a resident, and have a right of access", and she stepped aside immediately. Shame on Ms McKay for not knowing her rights & allowing herself to be bullied by someone with no authority, then being silly enough to complain to the paper about it. And why all the other negative comments, it was ONE DAY, get over it and have some respect! It was quite eerie to wake up to silence on Tuesday morning, I didn't realise how noisy Cameron road was, I think it should be closed permanently...

Methinks it is you who ought to find a real life considering your scathing and vitriolic attack on a member of our community. Sad...

Hey Penguin, is that the best you could come back with? Seriously check out the other comments, most of them are similar to mine....we are all members of the community mate just that some of us don't moan and whine about pitiful things like walking 500 metres like others.....

US is stirring up war in the Ukraine, Children tortured and murdered in Gaza, our Government sneaking through TPP, corrupt bankers ruining lives, toxic flouride in our water, toxic GMO's in our food, sky-rocketing cancer rates because of the corporate for profit processed food industry, and your getting all wound up over getting wet because of a short disruption in traffic flow. more serious things happening in this world than your pathetic problems. build a bridge.

Notwithstanding your latest comment, mine still stands. And in case you have any delusions to the contrary, I am not your "mate!" One assumes that you know the full details of the incident reported and are in a strong position to make supposedly informed comments...somehow I doubt it.

Out of town

I travelled from Wellington, with my 2 children, we managed to find loads of parking off Kauri Street, from the tennis club all the way down ... yes the weather was crap in the morning, but there was plenty of notice forewarning of road closures, it was advised to plan ahead ... I cant believe the media would print a story so trivial.

Oh goodness
