‘Wild Boy’ reveals trek tales

With sturdy tramping boots and a Hunger Games like instinct, Brando Yelavich is nearing the summit of his personal Everest - circumnavigating the entire New Zealand coastline on foot.

For most people walking 7000km and living off the land is a tough ask to say the least, but the 20-year-old is taking the challenge in his stride and has raised more than $16,000 for the Ronald McDonald House along the way.

Starting out last February at Cape Reinga, Brando has walked for one year and 111 days, making his way down the west coasts of the North and South Islands to Bluff before returning up the east coast.

Suffering from ADHD and dyslexia, Brando decided to wipe the slate clean and embark on the inspiring trek after being unable to achieve his grades or get a decent job in Auckland.

'I came up with the idea because I was kind of headed down the wrong road in life and decided I needed something to change that,” says Brando.

'When I discovered no one else had ever walked around the entire coastline of New Zealand before, I thought it was a great opportunity to give myself opportunities that I never would have had beforehand.”

Speaking to SunLive after finishing a walking leg from the Kaituna Cut to Papamoa, the 20-year-old tells how he has undergone a dramatic maturity transformation since embarking on the solo journey, which he initially believed would take just six months to conquer.

'I have grown along the way. It was hard at times and it's been really tough at times, but I have pulled through.

'I'm hoping that I can be a young wise man, instead of an old wise man. One day I will be an old wise man, but I would like to start young.”

Brando walks between 15-35km a day in six to 10 hour stints with nothing more than the clothes and pack on his back and lives off the land.

The 35kg pack includes an inflatable raft for crossing streams and rivers, a water bladder, and frying pan along with knives and a crossbow for hunting.

'I live off the land and the generosity of kiwis. On my bag I have a cross bow, fishing line for catching eels and fish and the bow is for shooting game.

'I will leave it to your imagination, but you name it I have probably eaten it. Possum, goat, rabbit, deer, pig, just about everything.”

Magnificent Achievement

Absolutely magnificent! Some would be tempted to say "Congratulations! What a magnificent journey and achievement." And, so it is. I would like to say that I think the biggest and most impressive part of such an epic quest is the obvious strength and tenacity that first brought about the decision to journey, the insightful target of genuine life-gains, and then provided the energy, dauntless virtue and determination....To keep going day after day - obstacle after obstacle! That, I see, was the real challenge and indeed the real strength used on that pilgrimage to a "life-state" as yet unseen - only imagined and sought. Congratulations Brando! A thoroughly outstanding achievement that I can see will indeed continue guiding and even forming your life long after the last step has been placed. With my great admiration.......
