New Zealand Music Month was alive and kicking at Te Puke High School yesterday where students were entertained by some homegrown ‘backyard beats'.

Hundreds of students packed the school's quad for a lunchtime concert by Auckland-based singer-songwriter Donell Lewis and rapper Fred Faafou, more commonly known as Deach, after the school won Mai FM's High School Heist competition.
The competition asks listeners to nominate their school to win a lunchtime concert with a performing artist.
To win the competition Year 13 students Honey Paul, Nicole Pislor and Penny Bristow created a video showing how much they wanted to win and sent it to the radio station.
'We wanted our school to be noticed,” says Honey.
'We wanted the Year 9 students at our school to see that our school can be fun and show what our school can bring to them and all of the great opportunities we get,” says Nicole.
The visit proved extra special as filming took place for Deach's new music video to be screened on Channel Four Live this week.
Deach is a member of South Auckland hiphop group ‘Smashproof'.
Despite liking the musicians for their ‘good looks', the girls say the duo's music is inspirational, with their favourite songs including Deach's ‘Tell No Lie' and Donell's' ‘Show No Love'.
'They're really attractive,” laugh the girls.
'They sound inspirational. Their songs have meaning to them. They just seem like really down to earth people and that's what I like about them,” says Nicole, who listens to their songs often.”
