A former Somali immigrant's plan to be deported by committing a serious crime has backfired and he will instead spend at least another two years and 10 months in a New Zealand jail.
Mohammed Abdiwali, 23, is sentenced today to five years and eight months' jail after earlier pleading guilty to sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, and burglary.

Abdiwali molested a sleeping woman during the burglary of her Te Puke home on April 11. He ran from the bedroom when the sleeping woman awoke and objected, taking a suitcase full of things taken from the house.
He was found by police the following day attempting to hitch hike to Rotorua.
When he pleaded guilty on May 12 this year he told the court he undertook the crime as he was desperate to return to Somalia.
In court today he said he would burn down Parliament if he didn't get deported.
Abdiwali's mother died in childbirth and he was brought to New Zealand by relatives when he was 12-years-old.
A psychiatric report found he was fit to plead and fit to stand trial.
Judge Christopher Harding said a minimum non-parole period is required to protect the community, particularly in light of Abdiwali's beliefs and his 39 previous convictions, primarily for burglary.
He's considered to have a high risk of re-offending, and a high risk of harm to others, says the Judge.

What about the taxpayer?

I hear that it costs $100,000 per year to keep a prisoner. That's half a million dollars for the taxpayer to keep a man in this country. We don't want him here, he wants to go to Somalia. Let him earn his ticket home, send him off, never to come back I say.
