Tga praise at camera choice

Tauranga taxi companies are praising the government's decision to make security cameras compulsory in New Zealand's larger cities and towns.
Government began exploring options to improve taxi driver security after the killing of Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini on January 31.

Sukhwinder Singh is a happy with the government's decision to make security cameras compulsory in taxis in major centres.

Installing security cameras were among the options approved by cabinet on Tuesday. It will come into force next year.
Tauranga Mount Taxis chairman, Sukhwinder Singh, applauds the decision but says it will not make a difference to their fleet.
"About 85 per cent of our taxis already have security cameras so it doesn't make a difference to us," says Sukhwinder.
He says six drivers from Tauranga Mount Taxis have been attacked over the past two years.
"It's been horrible for us. The main problem was that not all Taxi companies were complying and getting cameras installed."
Many taxi drivers were hoping the government would allow security shields to be installed.
"We didn't get much of a response from owners on that (security shields)," says Sukhwinder.
He believes the government still needs to do a lot more to bring the nation's taxi industry inline with international standards.
"There's still a lot of things that need to be done. When you compare our taxi industry with other developed countries, we are still quite a bit behind."
