Three fire trucks and police were called to the blaze just before 5pm.
A reporter at the scene says fire fighters put out the fire quickly, and that nobody was inside the home.
Solomon Street resident Angela August was in her kitchen when she looked up to see smoke.
'You can see the house across the street, I looked up and you could see the house on fire.
'Smoke went up around it so fast, within a matter of minutes. It was light to start and then went up fast.”
Firefighters have now got the fire in the two storey brick and Tudor style home under control.
It is understood brigades from Tauranga and Mount Maunganui attended.
