Te Puke and its iconic giant kiwifruit will represent the Bay of Plenty in NZ Post's latest legendary landmark stamp collection.
The town will appear on the New Zealand stamp as one of 18 other featured landmarks from around the country.
Te Puke's kiwifruit will feature on a new stamp collection from NZ Post.
The stamp features the statue of a giant slice of kiwifruit - a roadside landmark that resonates with many Kiwis.
Kiwi 360 owner Graeme Crossman says with close to 100 million trays of kiwifruit being exported around the world, the fruit is as much of an international icon as it is a New Zealand one.
'It's recognised in about 53 countries around the world…[but it] comes from this unique little pocket of land where we grow nearly all of New Zealand's Kiwis.”
Kiwifruit is up there for what New Zealand is known for – 'such as the All Blacks or sheep”, says Graeme.
'When you go worldwide and you ask what New Zealand is known for, it [kiwifruit] is one of our recognised icons.
'And it's right here in Te Puke.”
The kiwifruit has featured in a past NZ Post stamp collection, but Graeme says this is the first time the town itself is being recognised.
'This stamp says the ‘heart of kiwifruit country'. That is talking about the area rather than the fruit itself – that's the difference.
'We can embrace all of the things we can grow in this incredible environment…the culture, the schools and all those communities we have here.”
The collection can be purchased in stores and online now until 1 July 2016, unless stocks are exhausted earlier.
