RE: Rob Hale's boy racer letter 25 Sept: Rob's comments on the Boy Racer problem are very well put. It's nothing new for young people to be interested in cars, the only real difference is today's cars are a lot quicker and consequently more lethal than the ol' jalopies of days gone by. (They handle a lot better, and are a lot safer in crashes too by the way.)
These guys are passionate about their hobby and instead of condemning their passion, support it, and help them turn it into a business or an occupation that provides a form of income. This will encourage the guys to take more pride in their work and make great (safe) cars instead of hacks, ultimately they'll be less inclined to thrash them to bits due to the effort they've put in.
An idiot is an idiot and will always drive like an idiot (I've seen countless 40 and 50 year old knobs driving dangerously in their totally awesome Holden Commodores), but many of these 'racers” are just good guys with an unfocused passion.
