The first Agewise driving course run in Whakatane last week was a big hit, judging by the positive feedback received, says the Whakatane District Council.
The 10 participants, who came from as far afield as Te Kaha, enjoyed the chance to refresh their driving skills and came away with changed attitudes towards road safety.
The first Agewise driving course has received positive feedback.
All agreed it was a very worthwhile, informative course that gave them a renewed awareness of road protocol and a better understanding of the need to plan routes ahead of time and to always communicate clearly with other drivers.
One attendee enjoyed the course so much he has signed up to repeat the day.
Course co-ordinator Chris King-Hazel says all the participants indicated they'd recommend Agewise to other drivers.
Run by Whakatane District Council, the course aims to help people over 60 avoid traumatic driving situations and stay safe on the roads.
It recognises that senior drivers in the Eastern Bay are an at-risk group and helps them recognise and cope with the effects of ageing on driving.
According to the Ministry of Transport, senior drivers are 3.5 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed than a young person involved in a crash of similar severity.
Future courses will be run on demand and are filling fast.
