While the official police search for missing five-year-old Jack Dixon has been scaled back, members of the community are still determined to find the little boy and bring him home.
The community is also banding together to raise money for the family to assist with the costs associated with the search and for the many tough days ahead of them.
Search and rescue teams have been looking for Jack since he went missing four days ago
A Give a Little fundraising page was set up to support Jack's family, who have pledged to give the portion of the money to Surf Life Saving.
So far, more than $30,000 have been raised. Make a pledge or view the page here.
It's been four days since Jack was swept out to sea by a large wave as he played at the water's edge in an area known as Shelly Beach in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday.
Yesterday police announced they were talking about scaling back the search for Jack but will continue to assess the situation on a daily basis.
Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair says their focus is to bring Jack home if they possibly can as conditions allow.
Police and search and rescue volunteers, supported by members of the three local surf lifesaving clubs, have been searching for Jack since his disappearance, but without success.
'We've had fantastic support from all of the volunteers and the local community who have rallied in behind us to help find Jack,” says Karl.
Police are continuing to support the family.
Local surfer Brett Morrison has organised a paddle out for tomorrow after hearing of the five-year-old's disappearance.
'We will be paying our respects to both Jack and the sea that took him, and in the hope he will be returned to his family.”
About 125 people have signalled that they will be attending the event at Mount Main Beach at 4.30pm.
A Give a Little fundraising page has also been set up to support Jack's family, who have pledged to give the portion of the money to Surf Life Saving.
The page has been set up for anyone wanting to make a donation to assist the family with the costs associated with the search and for the many tough days ahead of them.
