Classic line-up at Mount car show

Hot rods, custom cars, motorbikes and tractors are drawing large crowds to The Mount today for the 2014 Wheels on Mainstreet.

Car enthusiasts, both young and old, are enjoying the atmosphere and End of the Road Rods and Classics event coordinator Straw Lye says children are going 'berserk” for the hot rods.

As well as classic cars lining Maunganui Road, the Bay of Plenty Drag Racing club is down at Coronation Park with their cars on display.

'It's a bit hard to know at this stage (how many cars there are) but I think we have about 200 vehicles here today.”

A cruise ship in port today is adding to the number of people at the show and Straw says feedback has been positive.

'I was talking to one of the crew members today and he was one of the first on the street and he was impressed with what is happening.

'The guys that belong to the clubs have been talking with some of the visitors who have been suitable impressed and surprised by the event.”

This is the third year the event has run and it has growing in popularity since its inception.

'It's getting bigger and better every year,” says Straw. 'We are going to make it bigger and bigger next year and as soon as this one is put to bed, then we will be into planning for next year's event.”

Straw says with everyone having a different interest in different vehicles, it makes it worthwhile to have a bit of everything.

'We have hot rods, custom cars, classics and motorbikes. There is a bit of everything here for everyone.” The event wraps up at 2pm today, with prize giving already underway for the top car and bike, people's choice awards and ten spot prizes.
