Mount man flags up new design

The Prime Minister is adamant he wants a new national flag – and he's prepared to spend $25.7 million of taxpayers' dosh on two referendums during two years to get one.

Mount Maunganui artist Timo Rannali wholeheartedly agrees, and has leapt to his easel in support.

Patriot and artist, Timo Rannali, wants his new standard fluttering proudly from every flagpole in the country. Photo By Tracy Hardy.

When SunLive asked Timo to come up with a concept, he admitted a new flag had been on his mind and in his heart for some time.

Timo considers himself a patriot first – 'you have to love where you live” – and an artist second. And the proud Kiwi, with Finnish bloodlines, has tapped both aspects of his colourful persona to produce what he believes could be, and should be, the new New Zealand flag.

'Wouldn't it be great if a new flag was designed right here in Bay of Plenty,” he says. 'Mine is certainly a starting point for discussion.”

Timo thinks a national flag should tell a story, saying: 'You should touch it and feel that the flag tells the story of who we are, where we've come from and where we're headed.”

It's a symbol of unity – of a shared Maori and European society. 'It's a unity that should be jealously guarded,” he adds.

Timo's flag has three sections.

The blue is Ranginui (the Sky Father) and the stars indicate how Maori and European ancestors navigated their way here.

The red, blue and white acknowledges an English/European heritage and is an adaption of our existing flag.

Tino Rangatiratanga – the Maori flag – celebrates our earliest inhabitants and the nation's journey through the Treaty of Waitangi.

The Koru represents 'the unfolding of new life, continuity and hope”. 'It is a unifying thing and all very positive,” says Timo.

And the silver fern, the quasi-national emblem, is the stem of the country's backbone; the strength and the fronds represent the rich diversity of peoples. The arrow-like fern points lean skyward, signifying a nation's journey from strength-to-strength.

Timo says this is a very encouraging design and should keep everyone happy, adding: 'It's not too busy and is aesthetically pleasant.”

He says we are the closest thing to Utopia on the globe, and says: 'Our flag should fire us, make us stop and beat our chests with pride and gratitude.”

And holding his new flag Timo says: 'I believe we have something special here”.

A copy of Timo's flag has this week been sent to Tauranga MP Simon Bridge's office in Wellington.

The new Minister liked it and it's now sitting on the Prime Minister's desk.

Seriously!!!

What a huge waste of taxpayers money on something that is so unnecessary. There is nothing wrong with the flag we already have.

just think of all the other things that can be helped with this money instead of a dam flag. a flag is not going to solve new zealands problems

Referendum Cost

Think what $27.7 m will achieve in relation to child poverty.

LOVE IT

Posted on 31-10-2014 13:09 | By freedomkiwis

Well much as I am against so much money being spent on referendums for the flag change, when there is no much poverty out there - I have to say that I love this design. The whole European and Maori living together with pride is evident in this design. I do like it.

Don't Agree

Posted on 31-10-2014 13:24 | By Jitter

If we must have a new flag, as we are now a multicultural society, the new flag must represent this. Timo's flag only represents Europeans and "Maori". The new flag must be of a design to represent and be satisfactory to all cultures. The "Maori" flag as part of his design does not represent the first inhabitants of NZ as Moriori were here long before "Maori" and their own culture and history passed down from generation to generation tells of fair skinned, red haired people being resident long before they arrived.I have seen a number of designs published which would I believe be universally acceptable and which exclude racial overtones favouring one racial group.

navigation

Posted on 31-10-2014 13:25 | By Captain Sensible

The maori did not navigate to NZ, they ended up here as a result of wind and current. With no concept of angles, numbers, time, latitude, longitude, charts, distance, speed or the shape of the earth, it was purely accidental.

Prime Ministers Ego

Posted on 31-10-2014 13:45 | By Merlin

This is all about John keys ego trip to have a new flag and spend 26 Million which would be better spent on poverty which they have had 6 years to fix

Too much

Posted on 31-10-2014 13:50 | By Paul Melhuish

From a design perspective I think there is too much going on with this design. Successful flags use simple structures with appropriate colours. This one is mashing 3 already existing concepts together when one new idea (perhaps borrowing aspects of older ideas) is needed.

Kiwi

Posted on 31-10-2014 14:01 | By DAD

I don't agree with a ref. on a new flag but if we do get a new one I think it should have a KIWI on it ,this would refer to all NZ's not any racial bias!

Brilliant!

Posted on 31-10-2014 14:35 | By Baystyle

Best design I have seen. Way better than the Australian copy flag we have now. Pity we don't become a republic at the same time. And don't moan about the cost, most of you voted for National.

Our money

Posted on 31-10-2014 15:14 | By roseh

What a huge cost to get a new flag.Wake up Mr keys there are so many other things that money could be spent on. If you so badly want a new one pay the bill, but don't use tax payers money

What a Rich Country . .

Posted on 31-10-2014 15:53 | By Makkas1313

To be able to spend an absolute vulgar amount of money on nothing but whimsical ideas from fat bottomed politicians feathering their own nests and propping up their own egos . . . My father fought to protect this flag & country . . . Let's be happy and grateful with what we have and collectively work on our peoples needs not politicians wants!

hmmmm

Looks a bit of a hotch poch of other designs

I take exception to your statement that most of us voted National. National's share of the vote was less than 50%. Note I said share of the vote. You may say that those who did not vote are National supporters, I would guess more dissatisfied with the whole system. I agree with those who say wasted money on a flag. Far better things to spend money on. If John Key wants a change he funds from private source which would of course mean change to all licences etc. The cost only begins with the referendum.

I think it's great. Well done. All bases covered. Hope it's one we get to vote on.

We need the Shamrock on it most of us here are of Irish decent it is about freedom

Nationalism is a waste

Posted on 31-10-2014 19:56 | By Conzar

There should be zero investment in nationalistic agendas. That $27m would be much better spent on the Greens investigation into Universal Basic Income. But complain as you will, 48% of NZ'rs voted for the nationals, so you get what you voted for.

cart before the horse

There`s nothing like a major distraction to take the public`s mind off the real issues. In the first place;who has decided that we need a new flag and if the public so chose, let loose the daubers, the racial discontented and any one with a box of crayons.wiz If we are looking for a symbol that reflects the Nation`s history, look no further than our current flag.A flag that reminded the world of who we are and the history of our proud little nation.wiz;31/10/

Geez!!

Posted on 01-11-2014 09:33 | By Me again

How pathetic is that. $27 something mill. on a piece of rag. Whats with St Johns ambo, Surf life, They need propping up and they do more for this country than that does. I for one would be a shamed to know that this Govt. is spending mega dollars on it. Just as well I did not vote for them. We all use these services in some way or another and I for one would hope that this dumb idea gets shelved somewhere dark and dingy.

arrogant

JK once again is pushing his own barrow, wonder what he is trying to slip through this time under the guise of a new flag. waste our money on a referendum that he wont take any notice of as he did with the last referendums we had,the flag is a big part of our history and a lot of people died under it to give us the freedom that we enjoy today no need to change it.

@ Luebert

Posted on 03-11-2014 12:52 | By YOGI BEAR

$27m isn't that much, Helen C spent $20m at the UN so as she had a job to go to after PM. This looks at least to be something for all in the end I guess, not sure about some of the designs but hey well lets see what comes out of it in the end.

@ Paul Melhuish

Posted on 03-11-2014 13:40 | By YOGI BEAR

Agree mate, overkill, to busy. I do like the silver fern as a part of the flag, perhaps that and the Southern Cross, forget the rest of it as clutter.

Kites and seagulls

Posted on 03-11-2014 21:10 | By YOGI BEAR

Looks like another kite less the seagull, we all know not a good idea to be under or behind a seagull now don't we. perhaps just put this in the same category and treat it the same as quick as possible.

Up the pole stream?

Posted on 05-11-2014 16:52 | By YOGI BEAR

The usual carry on here of name dropping, to much flapping around on this scheme already, the existing flag is just fine and taxpayers don't need $27m wasted to decide that.

Great flag Timo,

Posted on 05-11-2014 17:16 | By robin bell

Don't take any notice of the usual whingers, they don't like anything.Time to break the ties and create a truly independent Nation.Sadly we have to take the usual suspects with us. Robin Bell.

Flag a fair representation

Posted on 06-11-2014 08:56 | By YOGI BEAR

based on all the ethnic groups that have been in NZ over the last 3000 years or so the flag shown above does not in any way reflect the indigenous people of NZ equitably.

Foregone Conclusion

Posted on 06-11-2014 10:29 | By Mary Faith

Yes - what a waste of money when the result is a foregone conclusion! Sunlives poll of 80% against is indicative of the way the country feels. Is this referendum binding? JK will no doubt ignore it if it isn't! As for spending the money on child poverty - there is no such thing - IT IS CHILD NEGLECT!

@ Mary Faith

Posted on 07-11-2014 08:31 | By YOGI BEAR

True indeed, the result is overwhelming and obvious.

From Flag to Child poverty.

Posted on 07-11-2014 15:17 | By robin bell

Amazing!!! Head in the sand,as usual from Mary and yogi, let the children suffer. No solution offered, whinging about the money, same ole, same ole. Timo's flag is a cracker, just what N.Z. needs. I recall the same whingers calling for a referendum,on the Treaty a few short months ago. Something smelly there. Robin Bell.

To busy

Posted on 07-11-2014 18:21 | By YOGI BEAR

That drawing is way to complicated and bears no relationship to a multicultural NZ and its history.

No

Posted on 07-11-2014 20:28 | By Johnnyredneck

That makes NZ look like it has a huge Maori/European divide torn right through the middle ? Oh wait, we do.

Johnnyredneck

Posted on 10-11-2014 00:38 | By YOGI BEAR

Absolutely correct on all counts, heaven forbid the truth getting out anytime soon, at least not until the public coffers have been emptied by the faithful in Wellington first anyway.

Sorry ...

Posted on 10-11-2014 23:50 | By Murray.Guy

First thought was divisive. Sorry! Have seen a number of variations that reflect our Nation, as we are and where we are heading.

You've got it wrong

Posted on 11-11-2014 19:21 | By robin bell

this time Johnnyredneck. We are not divided down 'the middle' A very small minority, many in Tauranga, shudder at anything that includes Maori. It's a problem they have,no one else.Robin Bell.

How interesting Murray,

Posted on 12-11-2014 09:44 | By robin bell

You really should be more forthright if you wish to be a polly. Flags are not divisive, only the mind conjures up that reaction. you are a bit like morepork,he wants Maori culture, but nothing more.Like most of the dozen or so contributors you cringe at anything suggesting Maori are partners in the formation of this Nation. You will get over it one day, or not. Robin Bell.

Simpler

Posted on 14-11-2014 14:24 | By Mischelle

I like the idea of a cultural blend but the design should be simpler and more unified....{Graphic designer of 35 years}......Good on him though!!!

@ Robin

Posted on 17-11-2014 10:22 | By YOGI BEAR

In the name of a flag there can be a divisive tone created, here we have an obvious situation where the flag does not represent New Zealand, sadly it is something else that does not represent us all going forward.

Flags,

Posted on 19-11-2014 08:33 | By robin bell

have always had the effect of uniting or dividing,so whats new. I agree with Mischelle, Timo's flag is a wee bit fussy, but in general reflects formation of New Zealand. It go's without saying yogi old bore, You will never be happy with anything that includes Maori. Robin Bell.

Flags and flags

Posted on 20-11-2014 15:12 | By YOGI BEAR

Maori something in a flag is fine with me, but if so then all genuine ethnic groups should also be represented in line with a merit based system, Maori have been in NZ from about 1400-1769 and even then the just used a part of the coast to love, add to that of course that Moriori were here during and of course well before Maori for example then Moriori should have a more significant portion, so representing a real part of NZ's past. Robin, it is a case of representing all not just a few wannabee grandstanders without any status or substantive claim to anything in the first place.

$25mil distraction

Posted on 20-11-2014 23:23 | By Powa2daPeopl

Well, I don't like it. Sorry Timo. No offence. I appreciate the sentiment, and like the kaupapa but I just do not like it. As a mixed heritage "kiwi", of the fairer variety I might add, I identify with my Maoritanga more than any other. This only reminds me of the pain, or mamae the early British conquerers inflicted on the native people of this country, lied to them and tricked them into a Contract of which they had no intention of ever fulfilling. 155 years on their descendants still continue to fight for what was promised. This flag idea is nothing but a distraction..Not to mention a waste of money people! HONOR THE TREATY.

Honour the Treaty
