A Pyes Pa rural tradition

Judging of calves, lambs and kid goats as well as a gumboot throwing competition, pony rides and a digger challenge are part of today's activities at Pyes Pa School's Calf Club Gala Day.

Organiser Kevin Russo says the gala day is running well with more than 1000 people attending the gala day so far.
The school has 170 pupils with many involved in either the calf club section or the gala day.
'It's fantastic for such a tiny rural school.”

More than 40 children participated in the calf club section of the day on Saturday morning and the winners will compete in the Tauranga Boys and Girls Agricultural Group Day at Tauranga Racecourse, October 23.

Jack Warren won trophies for junior leading, junior child effort and overall winner.
Last year Jack showed a goat but says he likes calves more because you get more cups.

New to the gala day this year, are helicopter rides and digger rides are proving popular, says Kevin.
Traditional fair ground activities including apple bobbing and the white elephant stall are part of the gala as well.


Matt Rorison and Socks came second in follow and call, first in leading and overall champion for leading.

Ryan Lowe, 4 was shown how to use a digger by Alex Reid from Higgins.
