Licence phishing scam uncovered

The New Zealand Transport Agency is offering to waive the fee for a replacement licence for anyone caught by a licence phishing scam.

The scam, which is circulated in the Bay of Plenty, advises people to provide driver licence details on a counterfeit website.

The bogus email.

Recipients of the scam emails are advised to delete them.

New versions of the email have appeared since the agency first warned about it Wednesday morning.

The messages purport to be from the ‘NZTA Services Team', and ask people to provide their driver licence details on a counterfeit website.

Headed, ‘Billing Information', the email asks ‘dear customer' if they have recently changed bank, address or drivers licence and provide a link to click through.

'These emails are not from the NZTA. They are part of a phishing scam which leads people to a counterfeit website,” says NZTA spokesperson Andy Knackstedt.

'If you receive one of these messages you should delete it immediately.”

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the Department of Internal Affairs have been informed, and both organisations have added them to their lists of scam alerts.

Anyone who inadvertently provided driver licence details on the counterfeit website is asked to phone the NZTA contact centre on 0800 822 422 and have their licence cancelled. This will ensure that the licence details will not be validated if someone attempts to use them for illegitimate purposes.

The normal fee of $38.20 will be waived, and a replacement licence provided at no charge.
