The 2015 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards has named Whangamata as the ninth best beach in New Zealand today.

Now into its third year the Travellers' Choice award rankings are determined by the quantity and quality of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches over a 12-month period.

A Whangamata Info Plus Centre spokesman, who asked not to be named, says the seventh place ranking was 'completely justified”.

'It's a beach resort that's got everything, so what more could you want? There's brilliant fishing, a brilliant and also safe surf beach.

'Whatever way the wind is blowing you've always got some part of the beach, harbour or estuary where you can swim without having sand blown in your face.”

The spokesman says the summer season so far has been really good, with 90 per cent of visitors being overseas tourist.

Earlier this month the centre manager Wilma Kmilcik said they had more visits than the last couple of years, with nearly 8,000 people coming through in January.

'Our summer was quite good,” says Wilma 'People were asking about accommodation, walks, surfing and paddle-boarding.”

Joining Whangamata in the top ten beaches were Ohope Beach which placed seventh, and Mount Maunganui which placed first for the third year in a row.

TripAdvisor is the world's largest travel website, operate in 45 countries and features featuring more than 200 million reviews and opinions of over 4.5m accommodations, restaurants and attractions.
