Wastewater plant upgrade starting soon

Stage three of a floating wetland and upgraded inlet works at the Coromandel Wastewater Treatment Plant is about to underway soon.

A resource consent for the Hauraki Rd wastewater treatment plant was renewed recently and a condition of that consent is upgrading the plant to comply with the current standards.

A contract for stage three of the works has been awarded to HG Leach following a tender process.

Thames-Coromandel District Council Water Services manager Ian Smith says preparation of the site started earlier this month.

'We estimate the upgrade being completed by late May,” says Ian. 'Veolia Water is still operating the wastewater treatment plant during the upgrade.”

Stage three includes installation of embankments, pond liners, baffles, and a new pump station.

A septage waste tank will also be installed and will improve the capacity of the ponds while adding a further 25 years to the life of the wastewater treatment plant.

During the works, there will be large vehicles used for moving clay spoil for the embankments but this should have minimal effects on residents of Hauraki Rd, who have been briefed by the council.

The wastewater treatment plant has been located at the Hauraki Rd site for the last 30 years.
