Urgency in Western Bay cricket

With just two weeks before the semi-finals in the WBOPCA Reserve and B Grade Championships, there will be some urgency for a number of teams in the title race this Saturday.

While multiple Reserve Grade titleholders Mount Maunganui, sit at the bottom of the standings, they are not out of the race for the top four.

With a win worth 20 points, the Mount side could theoretically make the playoffs, with two victories and other results going their way.

On Saturday the Mount travel to Pemberton Park to square off with Greerton. While the Mount side will be desperate for the win points on offer - Greerton will want to take out encounter and cement their place in the top four ahead of the final round.

Defending titleholders R&A Sangha, have made all the running in the 2015 race for the Western Bay silverware and sit astride the top of the standings with five successive victories.

This weekend brings a likely battle of attrition between the two Indians sides in the Reserve Grade competition, when the Sangha XI meets Sikh Sports at Fergusson Park.

The winner of the Katikati match-up with Cadets, who sit second and third on the leaderboard respectively is likely to give the victor a home semi-final, with Te Puke and Tauranga Boys' College meeting at the Te Puke Domain.

There is a logjam in second place on the B Grade standings with Singh XI, Grasshoppers, Greerton and defending champions Wanderers, six points adrift of current leaders Mount Maunganui.

Grasshoppers will grab a share of the lead if they can beat Mount Maunganui at Blake Park. The two sides both know how to win big games and a battle royal is on the cards between the genuine title contenders.

The Singh XI has home wicket advantage at Centennial Park in Te Puke against Greerton. There will be some desperation from both sides with a home semi-final in the frame for the winner.

Wanderers and Albion who both call Fergusson Park home will meet on the neutral venue at Mitchell Park, with Katikati and Cadets going to battle at the Uretara Domain in the Western Bay extremities.
