Crunch time in Williams Cup

Three of the four games in the final qualifying round of the Williams Cup will determine the top four, who will fight out the Baywide big prize this season.

The most vital encounter is likely to take place at Pemberton Park, where Eves Realty Greerton hosts Central. With Greerton slipping down the table after last week's arm wrestle with Element IMF Cadets, the Pemberton Park based side are in a must win situation against the Rotorua visitors.

While City Sports Bar Te Puke sits in fifth place, a Greerton loss would see both sides on equal points, with Te Puke progressing to the playoffs courtesy of defeating Greerton in round two.

There will be Bay of Plenty Intercity pride on the line, with the two teams having won a Baywide trophy apiece this season.

Greerton triumphed in the first half of the season Baywide Cup, with Central recently annexing the Baywide T20 title.

To give the match an extra edge, the first two matches between the two Williams Cup contenders were rained out, with the winner at Pemberton Park taking out bragging rights for the season.

The second big match-up, sees Carrus Mount Maunganui square off with arch rivals Cadets at Blake Park, with a home semi-final and a post section second life on the line.

The season ascendancy lies with the Mount side who beat Cadets in both the Baywide Cup and Baywide T20.

Two Bay of Plenty representative players, could have a big influence on the final outcome of the game.

Bay of Plenty and Mount captain Peter Drysdale, was in red hot form with the bat against Poverty Bay last weekend, smashing an unbeaten century as he led the Bay to a nine wicket win.

Cadets all-rounder Donovan Deeble has been a revelation in the Bay of Plenty First XI, taking up one of the strike bowlers role, to finish the Bay representative season with 16 wickets.

The Greerton players and supporters, will be keeping an ear on proceeding at the Te Puke Domain, where the home side is playing BOP Indians.

While Te Puke will be favoured to win, the Rotorua team with Plenty master blaster Bharat Popli back in their ranks, could cause an upset.

Popli rewrote the Bay of Plenty Cricket record book against Poverty Bay, smashing his seventh century since making his Bay debut six seasons ago.

Whakatane United and Tauranga Boys College will be playing for pride when they meet at Rex Morepeth Park in Whakatane. While both sides sit at the bottom of the standings, the pair showed good form in the Baywide T20 competition, with their season ending encounter likely to go down to the wire.
