Tug-of-war to fight violence

Harry Tawa and Paul Horler are among men from all over Tauranga expected to attend a special tug-of-war next Thursday, November 25, to help celebrate White Ribbon Day.

Men in Tauranga, which includes Harry Tawa and Paul Horler, are taking a stand against violence against women.

White Ribbon Day is an international day when people wear a white ribbon to show they do not condone violence towards women.
It celebrates the many men willing to show leadership and commitment to promoting safe, healthy relationships within families - and encourages men to challenge each other on abusive attitudes and behaviours.
Tauranga's constable Steve Campbell says abuse towards women is a significant problem in the region.
'Police spend a large portion of their daily workload dealing with it. Anything we can do to bring awareness to the problem and reduce the occurrences, the better.”
The rumble of motorcycles through Tauranga on Saturday, November 20, will also be the sound of men celebrating White Ribbon Day.
Motorcycle Club and Super Maori Fullas are leading the way in the White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride, which starts in Tauranga, and travels through other parts of New Zealand.
The ride is being launched with a White Ribbon breakfast at the Greerton Hall from 8am to 10am on November 20.
Tauranga Moana Abuse Prevention Strategy is organising next week's tug-of-war, which starts at Fraser Cove from 5.30pm.
