I've just been doing a bit of shopping at New World, I'm a bit of a foody so I don't mind the chore.
I went to check out my purchases, and was told that they were now charging for plastic bags.
Great, as well as being a foody ,I'm also a bit of a greeny. We have to save the planet.
Unfortunately I was a bit unprepared, so, as there were no cardboard boxes supplied, I put my purchases in my NW plastic shopping basket so I could carry them out to the car. I was feeling pretty smug, I'm helping to save the planet.
I put in the tomatoes on a polystyrene tray wrapped in cling film, all the veggies in plastic bags, some salted almonds in a nice reusable plastic zip bag, and of course the meat all on polystyrene trays and wrapped in cling film.
The only item that I bought that was in 'green” packaging was the eggs. So I think that New World might be having a bit of a joke with us about their green image.
It all had a happy ending though, a supervisor came out to the car with me so I wouldn't have to bring the basket back [at least that was the reason she gave me.]
Here's a good way to do it, its proved to work in other countries.
You get something like a 20 litre fish bin, you but all the junk, recyclables that you got from the super market.
When you go shopping you take the recyclables to the super market who have recycling bins [It is their junk after all] you dispose of the junk, put the fish bin in the shopping trolley, and proceed to do your shopping, putting your purchases in the fish bin. No need for plastic bags.
Its a win win situation.
Only thing is you would need a super market that really was green [and not one that was playing at it] to make it work.
For me I think Ill go to the super market that at least gives you cardboard boxes.
