Tauranga lead early charge

A rampant Tauranga Sports flexed their muscles over the weekend with a 78-14 demolition of Greerton Marist.

Coming off a the back of a hard-fought 20-16 opening round win over Te Puke, the 2013 Premiers were in commanding form at Greerton Park, and cemented their reputation as one of the early form teams.

With a scattering of Bay of Plenty Steamers throughout the side, including a loose forward trio of Carl Axtens, Hamish Gosling and Jesse Acton, Tauranga have an abrasive forward pack and a potent backline, headlined by Nick Evmey and former Steamer Ben Smith.

The win sees Tauranga top of the table alongside defending champions Mount Maunganui, and both have two wins apiece.

The Mount edged past Te Puke 18-13 at Mount College, adding to their opening round win over Rangataua.

Te Puna grabbed their first win of the season with a 25-3 victory against Rangataua, and claimed the Gilly Bidois trophy in the process.

This weekend sees Tauranga and the Mount clash at Mount College in what should be a mouth-watering showdown.

Te Puke host Te Puna at Murray Salt Stadium and Rangataua play host to Greerton Marist at Te Ariki Park.

Both Te Puke and Rangataua will be looking for their first victories of the season.
