Williams Cup decider

A pair of Western Bay of Plenty teams, who know all about lifting the Williams Cup aloft in victory, will battle out the 2015 Baywide big prize at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval this Saturday.

Element IMF Cadets and Carrus Mount Maunganui, emerged from the weekend semi-finals and preliminary final to earn the right to fight out the 2015 edition.

Last Sunday the Mount and Rotorua Central backed up from the previous day's semifinal action, to battle out the Williams Cup preliminary final at Smallbone Park in Rotorua, with the winner taking the second berth in next weekend's title decider.

Mount Maunganui batted first and posted Central a solid target when they reached 225/7. The Central batsmen struggled against the Mount bowling attack and were removed for just 110, to hand Mount Maunganui the second Williams Cup Grand Final place.

Cadets took the direct route to the Williams Cup Grand Final, when they defeated Rotorua Central in the major semifinal at Smallbone Park in Rotorua, on Saturday.

The Western Bay team took first use of the wicket and went on the attack, to post a solid 247 for the loss of nine wickets, in their allotted 50 overs.

The Western Bay side's skipper Ben Christensen led from the front and blasted 65, with Donovan Deeble also posting 65 runs.

The visitor's bowlers dominated the Central turn at bat removing the Rotorua side for just 127. Deeble, who is arguably the most improved Baywide premier player this season, was in rampant form with the ball and grabbed six wickets for just 20 runs.

The Mount then won what turned out to be an absolute thriller against Te Puke at Blake Park, to sneak home by a solitary wicket and earn a trip to Rotorua on Sunday, to play Central for the right to meet Cadets in the final.

Defending Williams Cup titleholders Te Puke, were dismissed for what looked to be a relatively modest 159, with Jeremy Bates top scoring with a hard fought 48 runs. Alex Gooding and Nick Smith were the best of the Mount bowling attack taking three wickets each.

However, the home side made heavy weather of the reply and at sixty odd runs for the loss of 4 wickets, had plenty of work to do.

The Mount's number seven batsman Dan Hill was resolute at one end and posted an unbeaten half century, as his side ground out a one wicket victory.

Ollie Smithson bowled good line and length and was rewarded with four wickets with Jeremy Bates backing up his batting heroics to take three wickets.

Both Cadets and the Mount will bring players with red-hot form in the qualifying rounds to the battle at the Bay Oval.

Mount skipper Peter Drysdale sits at the top of the batting list, since the Williams Cup started in mid-January.

Some 273 runs with a high score of 111 not out, testifies the ability of the Mount opener to craft big scores.

Both teams have leaders who like to lead from the front, with Cadets captain Christensen finishing in second in the batting stakes. 248 runs with a best of 82 tells just some of the story of the Cadets leader, who has posted a strike rate of nearly 80 runs per 100 balls.

Former New Zealand Under 19 player Sean Davey, has posted over 200 runs in the cup competition and could play a big part in the Cadets batting line-up. However, Mount keeper Tim Clarke with a highest score of 125 and 16-year-old Blair McKenzie are other form batsmen in the Mount side.

The bowling stakes are led by Mount Maunganui medium pacer Dan Hill and Cadets Donovan Deeble. The Mount quick bowler tops the wickets list with 29 bowling scalps and is more than handy with the bat, scoring a half century batting at seven against Te Puke last weekend.

Season best bowling figures of six wickets for 20 against Central last Saturday, tell some of the tale of the rise of Deeble this season. Unheralded at the start of the season, the Cadets bowler earned a place in the Bay of Plenty representative side and finished the Fergus Hickey Rosebowl season as the Bays top wicket taker.
