Mount Maunganui surfer Mac Christie had to settle for second in the South Island Surfing Championships' Under 20 Men's Division after a two-way battle on the waves with Christchurch competitor Max Marshall.

Marshall claimed his first national win in the Under 20 Men's Division of the competition held at St Clair Beach in Dunedin on Sunday after a close encounter with Mount's Christie.

Christie took an early lead in the final before Marshall came back at him with consecutive waves of 5.43 and 7.27 to take the lead and ultimately the win.

Christchurch surfer Jack Wilson placed third and Dunedin surfer Elliot Brown placed fourth.

Gisborne surfer Maz Quinn and Southland's Jessica Terrill claimed the men's and women's titles at the championships.

The two surfers dominated their respective finals held in clean 1.0m waves and clean surface conditions.

The result elevates Quinn to number one on the New Zealand rankings after two of five events in 2015.

Quinn posted a 17.73 point heat total. He surfed a near flawless heat with individual wave scores of 9.0 and 8.73 points out of a possible 10.

Quinn defeated Piha's Zen Wallis who finished runner up with a 14.77 point heat total after beating Quinn in the semi-finals earlier in the day.

The two surfers dominated proceedings in the final with local Dunedin surfer JC Susan placing third and Mount Maunganui's Mac Christie finishing in fourth place.

Jessica Terrill, the lone Southland surfer in the Women's Final, got off to a flyer accumulating a 13.50 point heat total after her first two waves.

The lead became insurmountable for her opponents who were left fighting for the minor placings.

Dunedin surfer Tash Mattingly held on for a runner up finish ahead of fellow Dunedin surfer Shani Ayson in second and early event stand out and defending champion Hayley Coakes, also from Dunedin, in fourth.

Dunedin's Elliot Brown went two places better in the Under 17 Boy's Final finishing runner up but his fine run of form at the event was eclipsed by another local Dunedin surfer in Buster Barton, who posted a 13.70 point heat total for a well-deserved win.

Jack McLeod placed third in the final ahead of Christchurch surfer Sam Sands in fourth.

Dunedin surfer Reuben Peryoux followed suit in the Under 14 Boy's Division taking another win for the Dunedin surfers fending off stiff competition from his three Christchurch opponents Myka Black, Zack Van Ekelen and Dara O'Malley who finished second through fourth respectively.

The senior divisions saw a clean sweep of Dunedin victories with Josh Thickpenny claiming the Over 28s, Scotty James the Over 35s and Justin Summerton the Over 45s.

Zen Wallis made up for his runner up finish in the Open Men's by winning the Longboard Division. Trailing Christchurch's Nick Black for much of the final, Wallis rode his last two waves for scores of 7.83 and then a near perfect 9.50 for the victory.

Black finished runner up ahead of Dunedin's Oliver Le Noel in third and Christchurch's Henry Hawke in fourth.

The final title of the day went to 15-year-old Dunedin surfer Shani Ayson, winning the Under 20 Girl's Division.

The South Island Champs is dual sanctioned as the second event of the New Zealand Pro Series and the South Island Circuit.

The event comprises ten divisions including the Open Men's and Women's as well as the Under 20 Boys, Longboard, Under 17 Boys, Under 14 Boys, Over 28s, Over 35s, Over 45s and Under 20 Girls.

The South Island Champs has received great support to get the 2015 edition up and running.

Event partners include: Corona, Quarry Beach, Boardbase, The Southern Trust, Matunas, Mason, FCS, Aloe Up, Hydro Surf, Esplanade Surf School, Star Fish and Auto Court. The event is proudly hosted by the South Coast Boardriders Association.
