A 53-year-old man has died following a crash in Whangarei last night.

The man was riding a motorcycle on Riverside Drive towards Onerahi when he collided with a car about 6.20pm at the intersection with Mackesy Drive.

The man was taken to Whangarei Hospital, but died a short time later.

The 50-year-old female driver of the car was uninjured.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or who was travelling along Riverside Drive around the time of the crash and saw the motorcycle, a 2009 Suzuki.

Police have named the man as Leslie Gordon Olney of Onerahi.
