Sides prime for Baywide

A depleted Mount Maunganui Sports isn't taking Greerton Marist lightly as they look to enter the Baywide competition buoyed by confidence and a win.

Round five of the Western Bay of Plenty premier competition pits the two top five sides against each other at Greerton Marist after contrasting fortunes last weekend.

The Mount, defending champions, were pushed close by Te Puna 22-21 while Greerton Marist lost to Te Puke32-24 at home.

The results have the Mount sitting in second behind frontrunner and early favourites Tauranga Sports who are yet to be tipped up, and Greerton in fourth with two wins.

Saturday's match will be a test for both teams management of players, with both teams holding a number of injuries.

Greerton Marist coach Kevin Lee says the side is still experimenting with the final make-up of the squad leading up to the Baywide competition starting May 2.

We see this as another pre-season game in the lead up to the BayWide round. We can't wait to get on board with the BayWide competition in a couple of weeks.”

Mount Maunganui coach Rodney Voullaire says they are concentrating purely on themselves and what the side is trying to achieve.

Our development system is working, with a number of players injured or been selected for Chiefs Development, it hasn't affected us, we look to maintain this.

'We won't be taking Greerton lightly, but we will be fully focused on us. Looking to play a running game, and we will see the return of some injured players and manage those who are still injured.”

Other matches see high flying Tauranga Sports host Te Puna and Rangataua home to Te Puke at Te Ariki Park.

In the Super 10s format last week's heavy rain and lightning meant only half the games were played but it couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of teams for the start of the U20/U85kg Super 10s held at Papamoa.

Six teams kicked off their seasons with three games of 10 aside.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union operations manager Neil Alton says it was fantastic to see 70 plus young guys out there having a heap of fun.

'Having talked to players and coaches it was a really good start and the teams are keen for more. What was pleasing to see was young guys who did not have a club at the start of the night, turn up, have a game, and now they have a club and team to play for.

'That's what it's about, connecting young players and school leavers with clubs. There is no doubt that most of these guys would not have the opportunity to play without the Super 10s.

'The participating clubs need to congratulated for putting in the effort to recruit the players and organising teams. I hope other clubs will quickly see the benefit of having a team and will want to get involved".

Tonight sees the Super 10s move to Te Puna Rugby Footbal Club and the following Friday to Eastern Districts Rugby Football Club at Paengaroa.
