Mobil has apologised for the fuel oil leak into Tauranga Harbour at Mount Maunganui on Monday.
Technical experts are currently on site carrying out further investigations, but the multinational petrol company has identified the leak which originated from a pipeline during a ship refuelling operation.
The leak originated from a pipe used for refueling. Photos: Supplied.
While the pipeline was quickly shut down and will remain closed until repairs can be carried out, it is as yet unknown how much oil was poured into the water.
In a statement released overnight,Mobil Oil New Zealand Lead Country Manager Andrew McNaught says the company regrets the event.
'We apologise for the incident and for any concern and inconvenience caused to the community,” says Andrew.
'We would like to assure them we are working as quickly as possible to safely manage the situation, to clean up the leaked fuel oil and minimise the impact on the environment.
'Mobil appreciates the efforts of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council in responding promptly and effectively to the incident.
'We will reimburse the Council for any direct costs incurred in the spill response and clean-up.”
There is now little remaining trace of fuel oil on the water following the spill, and clean-up operations are now focused on a section of the nearby beach.
Mobil crews are assisting the Bay of Plenty Regional Council in the response.
Andrew and the company are aware that several boats have been impacted by the fuel oil.
'Mobil is liaising with the local marina operator about boat cleaning procedures,” he adds. 'We recommend that clean-up is handled by an expert.”
Mobil has established a process to deal with claims and will consider claims for damage directly resulting from the leaked oil.

Congratulations to Mobil Oil Co for being "up front" and taking responsibility for this oil leak into Tauranga harbour. Their prompt acceptance of blame and responsibility is a refreshing change.Usually offending companies "dive for cover" and hide behind legal advise so thanks for your honesty. I assume Mobil will quickly install flow control monitoring meters on all refueling and pumps to ensure this can't occur again in our environmentally sensitive harbour. Max Lewis, Mt Maunganui.
Sorry doesn't cut it

Mobil should have the book thrown at them for this. Damage to the environment and bird life is disastrous.
Trust that

I feel you are a little naive. Mobil had no choice but to take responsibility because it was found to be their pipe. It is just the usual PR response and I see they will "consider" any claims for damage. It is often the case that large corporations will then spend thousands on legal fees to try and avoid their obligations and simply let the dust settle. Mobil will be no different.
Got caught.

Since it wasn't the ship, it had to be Mobil. They're the only ones who store HFO at the Mt. So they really aren't being that up front at all. And just like our politicians, they think a weak apology makes things perfect again.
What a joke they are

Surely it should be standard operating procedure to at least have an observer present when a ship is bunkering fuel at the wharf to check for leakage, how in this day and age can we have lethal fuel oil leaking into our beautiful harbor and no one present to ensure such accidents don't happen, or can stop the feeling immediately if there is a problem. Peoples Boats, accessories, ropes, fenders etc have been coated in sticky black oil at the marina downtide from the fuel depot and surrounding rock walls at the marina have oil all over them, fish and seabirds will be affected by this as well. I hope the full force of the environment agency comes down hard and hands out a significant fine on those responsible, big enough for them to ensure in future that this can never happen again!

Don't be too hasty - Mobile will be trying to minimise they costs/damages from tomorrow. Look at the nearby marina - EVERY bot will need to come out of the water and be given a SPECIAL CLEAN - why should the bot owner or the marina cop the cost? Look at the harbour-side damage at the top end of the harbour, why should the BOPRC or the TCC pay to remove the mess. Look at the wild life damage - who will pay to clean up the birds (forget the fish) BUT what about the shell fish on the mudflats and rocks ??? RENA all over again, BUT THIS LOT WAS ON PORT LAND, IN THE HARBOUR AND UNDER THE "CONTROL" OF AN OIL COMPANY........
