The Bay of Plenty Lakeland team finished with a flourish at the Northern Districts Senior Secondary Schools cricket tournament that concluded in Gisborne on Monday.

Playing off for seventh and eighth place, the Bay side comprehensively defeated Waikato Valley South in the two day finale to the annual ND tournament.

Waikato Valley South batted first on Sunday with the Bay side removing them for 171.

A combination of pace and spin from the Lakeland bowlers saw Matt Purdy finish with bowling figures of 5/35 with Chanse Perham taking 3/30.

The Lakeland reply saw the Bay side take first innings points when they were dismissed for 232.

Cameron Payne, who finished in the top four batsmen of the tournament, was in grand touch belting 77, with Pip Thickpenny contributing 73 runs.

The second day of the two day encounter belonged to the Bay side, who bowled out the Waikato team for 144. Chanse Perham finished with a seven wicket bag for the game, taking 4/19 in Waikato teams second innings – with Jayden Thomasen, Himesh Gosai and Matt Purdy grabbing two wickets each.

With a target of just 85 for an outright victory, the Bay representatives got home with seven wickets in hand, with Cameron Payne there at the end on 34 not out.

The Lakeland final result proved that there was little between the top and bottom team teams at the tournament.

While BOP Lakeland finished in seventh place, they provided Championship winners Hamilton with their only defeat of the tournament.

In what turned out to be a comprehensive victory, the Bay team dismissed Hamilton for 219 then cruised to a five-wicket victory.
