Action packed rugby weekend

Round Two of the Bayfair Baywide Premier Competition offers up some juicy fixtures for rugby purists across the region this weekend, none more so than the Tauranga Sports and Rotoiti clash.

Both sides are fresh from opening round win and come into the match as winners of the Western and Central Bay of Plenty local rounds.

Tauranga Sports are yet to drop a match this season, solidifying this run by demolishing Opotiki 62-10 last weekend. Rotoiti beat Greerton Marist 34-25 at home.

Tauranga Sports coach Mike Rogers says the Central Bay side are historically a team that performs really well against the Tauranga side.

'They beat us at home in 2014 and again at home in a semi-final in 2012.

'They are definitely a team that we respect; they play an exciting and physical brand of rugby which is a dangerous set of attributes.

He says the side is happy to be back at home and looking forward to the challenge that Rotoiti presents.

Rotoiti captain Joe Royal says the side needs nothing less than a 'big effort” to come away from the Tauranga Domain with the victory.

'It will be a bit of a challenge for us, Tauranga are a good side and are playing well.

'We are trucking along doing our thing, trying not to get too far ahead of ourselves. If we train well we should be all right”.

Other matches see Te Puke host Opotiki, Greerton Marist at home to Te Puna, Paroa against Waikite, Mount Maunganui travelling to Whakatane Marist, and Rangataua hosting a dominant Whakarewarewa side who thrashed Paroa 91-7.

In Division One, Judea and Te Teko will also look to register back-to-back wins when they meet at Maharaia Winiata Park.

Judea accounted for Katikati 38-17 while Te Teko posted a sizeable score, 62-13, against Poroporo.

Te Teko coach Mike Pryor says like most teams at this stage of the Baywide competition they are not too sure where they sit.

'This weekend's game we will go into with the impression that Judea will be a strong team, especially given that they are a Western Bay side.

We are just starting to find our feet, and I believe we have a pretty good chance of winning. We have a fast pack, which we will look to utilise”.

Pryor further reflects on the importance of this year for Te Teko.

'Every game we play, is dedicated to those who have played for Te Teko and are no longer with us or are watching us on the side-lines. Each game is for everyone who has been involved with Te Teko rugby for the past 125 years.”

Judea coach Dion Seeling says despite the side playing good rugby it is hard to judge themselves against the other sides so early on.

'Te Teko will be a big step up for us, it will be tough. But it will good for us, as we continue to learn to develop as a team with our mix of youth and veterans. We are looking forward to it”.

Rounding out Division One, Arataki host Reporoa, Galatea and Marist St Michael's clash, Ngongotaha host Katikati, Poroporo is at home to Kahukura, and Ruatoki hosts Rangiuru.

On Sunday it's the women's turn with Arataki hosting Waimana in the headline match.

Arataki captain Calli Turner says the side is looking forward what should be a good game given Waimana finished third in last year's competition.

'We have quite a new team but had a good win against Tauranga Sports last weekend so hoping to keep that momentum going.

Hoping the weather stays fine so we can play the fast paced running game we love.”

Waimana captain Janie Kaafi notes Arataki have always been the benchmark team in recent seasons, but is confident they can give them a 'run for their money”.

'We are ready to go and we are looking forward to the game and giving it everything we have got, executing our structures”.
