Severe thunderstorm watch issued

You may want to batten down the hatches as the Metservice has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Coromandel this morning.

Several active fronts are expected to move onto the upper North Island from the Tasman Sea this morning, bringing bursts of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms with hail.

Metservice says thunderstorms may be severe on the Coromandel Peninsula and in the Waikato today.

'Any severe thunderstorms that occur may produce localised downpours of 25 to 35mm/hr, and possibly one or two small but damaging tornados.

'Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.”

Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
