Tim’s rounding Mahia

Kayaker Tim Taylor is rounding Mahia peninsula after being forced ashore Wednesday by southwest gale force winds.

Tim at Mahia.

Friends gave him a night in a motel and a feed before setting him back on the beach Thursday.

Tim's shunned the traditional option of portaging across the isthmus and resumed the paddling on Thursday, camping over night near the end of Nukutaurua Road.

He set out early on Friday, rounding the tip of the peninsula mid morning.

By lunchtime Friday he looks likely to be near the shoreward end of the peninsula's western side – just a kilometre or so from where came ashore near Mahia on Wednesday.

Tim left Tauranga on November 27, setting out to be the first person to kayak round New Zealand in a single voyage.
