Slogan: it’s no laughing matter

The Sun Media effort to find a slogan for Tauranga is drawing national attention and the mocking coming with it is adding further proof for the need to have one.

Last week it featured on TV One's Breakfast show, although this reporting did receive drab reviews, and it is now featured on the NZ Herald's ‘sideswipe'.

‘Tempt Me Tauranga' was the slogan touted and pushed for in the 1990s.

'It is great that people around the country are jumping on this slogan issue,” says Sun Media director and campaign instigator Brian Rogers.

'But it's interesting to see the kind of things people outside of Tauranga are thinking about the city.

'On sideswipe there are slogans suggested such as ‘Tauranga: Where Matlock fans unite' and ‘Tauranga: Blue skies, grey hair'.

'All these suggestions do is further promote the antiquated views the rest of New Zealand has about Tauranga.

'Getting this national exposure is great and decision makers in Tauranga should be seeing how the rest of the country is mocking us.

'Surely having a slogan and then appropriately marketing it will help to change this outside perspective.”

Look at the Photo

Seriously, did you expect not to get some flack... Just look at the photo. Some of the suggestions I really like, but I like the "Safe Harbour" "Safe Anchorage" and Tommy Kapai's logo. Some people have said that it sounds like Gods Waiting room, but I disagree, as you just need to look around you and see that Tauranga/Mauao is "Alive and Vibrant" with people of all ages enjoying the natural Paradise we live in.

Maybe Tauranga is a sunny place but the people in the photo look like they've overdone it!
