Development of the Opotiki Harbour will reap other benefits to Opotiki on top of an aquaculture industry.
The 'Benefits of the Opotiki Harbour Development on Tourism' report has been prepared by Tourism Resource Consultants to complement the 2014 ‘Opotiki District Visitor Strategy'.
Aquaculture is just one benefit expected from the Opotiki Harbour Development.
The 2014 Visitor Strategy intentionally did not take into account the opportunities development of the Opotiki harbour would provide to the tourism sector.
The 2015 report does.
Construction of the harbour entrance is coming and associated in-shore developments that provide berthing space and moorings for up to 100 vessels - separate to the aquaculture vessels, will enable a marine tourism industry, says a statement from Opotiki District Council.
The report estimates 30 per cent growth in the visitor spend in Opotiki - or $6.1 million per year.
'The report identifies an opportunity that Opotiki will need to prepare for - to reposition our town so we can support a diverse range of marine based industries - including tourism.
'It's time to start planning and we want you to talk to us about it.”
