When the Greerton Library is opened in mid-July, it will be as the Greerton Library, not the Greerton Village Library, as some wanted.
The name change debate aired in the city council chambers this week with the decision being firmly in favour of the existing name.
On schedule for opening mid-July.
The Greerton Village Community Association sought the name change in line with the Greerton Mainstreet marketing campaign which has been calling Greerton a village since 1993.
Council staff opposed the name change for that reason. The Greerton Village campaign has been documented since 1993, and hasn't gained much traction. Greerton Village School is the only building to take up the name which hasn't been adopted by any of the Mainstreet businesses.
Only four of about 40 people were in favour of a library name change at the Greerton community connections meeting in December 2015.
Also the Greerton Library serves a wider area than Greerton village, and there may be translation issues. Library staff say the current names, both Maori and English, were carefully chosen. Tutarawananga is a centre of learning with an Influence and Importance spreading far beyond its local area. Greerton Library is also a centre of learning, and its Influence spreads beyond its immediate location.
Also the name Greerton Library /Te Ao Marama Ki Tutarawananga was discussed and approved by the TCC Tangata Whenua committee before design of the new library started, and any changes will also have to be referred to that committee.
City councillors voted 8-3 to keep the name as is.

Is that the library clientele? That sounds about right, they each go regularly, perhaps 2 times a week so that is about 16 people in there a day, in total, I knew it was a roaring success and another quality TCC project. Now we just need to see the under budget over the top cost to create it all?
Some people have nothing better to do

Fancy having to have a meeting because a few people suggested changing a name. How about just saying NO? This library is going to be more of a social centre in my opinion. Saying something will be centre of learning and influence is only words. Obviously our council has plenty of money do spruce up things, or is it borrowed money??

I cannot say on here what I want to say to you.....BUT zip your mouth if you don't live in Greerton Village, don't know the history, or just don't give a damn...What's in a NAME...Greerton Village School, Greerton Village Countdown....ASK THE LOCALS...The Council asked the locals, just to give the illusion of CONSULTING with the public, but even our OWN LOCAL WARD COUNCILLORS disregarded the majority preference.

Annalist in my opinion is correct, if you are so patriotic, you and your group as I said at the original debate, should fund it yourself!!!!, if all business owners in Greerton had bought into the concept, well and good, but no they have not!!!
Wow what a nothing debate

Seriously, they had a meeting about a piddly thing like that? There is only one Greerton, there is no separate shopping centre called 'Greerton Village'. Imagine the hubbub if they build a new library at the Mount, will it be Mt Maunganui Library, Mount Library, Downtown The Mount Library or Mauao Library...
