Paddle boarding to Mayor Island

Brent Bourgeois is today paddle boarding to Mayor Island and, maybe, back again.

The long term Mount resident set out from Tay Street at 7am and crossed the 38km of open sea to Tuhua before 2pm today, and then setting out to paddle around the island.

Brent advised friends on Facebook before he left that he will stay overnight in South East Bay and return to the mainland tomorrow, or he might return tonight. It depends on the conditions and how he feels.

Steve Glover at Steve's Marine Supplies loaned Brent a spot tracker - which has charted progress here.

Brent's being escorted by a couple of mates in a fishing boat, but they are also fishing. They are going off for a fish then coming back to check on him, says Steve.

Steve think's the paddle is a personal bucket list mission.

'They are going to stay in SE bay tonight in the cabins. I think he's got all that all sorted,” says Steve.

'He's done it so quickly he's averaged nearly seven km/h which is pretty good. He's right round the back of Mayor Island already. He wasn't sure if he was going to do that.”
