Second vice grip steering case

Just hours after a car being steered with a pair of vice grips crashed in Tauranga, a second case has emerged.

The car was discovered near Rotorua, according to the Waikato Road Policing Team.

Tool behind the wheel: A second case of vice-grip steerage.

"At about 9.15am Rotorua Police, investigating a suspicious abandoned vehicle on State Highway 5, Mamaku, found an unregistered, unwarranted vehicle with a missing steering wheel parked in a rural driveway.

Later an officer then saw the car on the move while he was dealing with a driver caught using their mobile phone.

"The officer, whilst stopped with a driver using their cellphone whilst driving saw the vehicle driving a short time later towards Tirau, approaching a roadwork site controlled with a stop/go sign."

Police stopped the driver, who was found to be controlling it with the vice grips, according to police Facebook site.

"A 28-year-old female, who gave false details, will appear in the Rotorua District Court on a number of charges including dangerous driving.

"The officer was astounded that someone would attempt to drive a vehicle in such a poor state, putting other road users at risk, on the back of yesterday's crash involving vice grip steering wheels."

The incident happens just a day after another car being driven using vice grips crashed into another vehicle in Tauranga.

Have the sense to have another pair of vice grips on the other side... then it might be like riding a bike? I wonder if the steering wheels were removed on purpose or it was to overcome a steering lock? More details on why they were driving with vice grips would be good.... hopefully they didn't have a milk crate for a drivers seat to go with the vice grips?

Stupid

School kids are taught it is their choice and anything is possible. Then when some get older and read/send texts while driving, throw rubbish out of windows, swear at old slow drivers and even drive unsafe cars sometimes we wonder why. Bring back discipline in schools I say!

Wow

I would be pretty pissed off if a driver using vice grips for a steering wheel crashed into me.

Simlpe answer !

Is the car registered with a WOF ??? Yes, put it off the road until it has a proper steering wheel. NO ?? NO ??CRUSH IT. The article does not say if it's regoed or wofed, but a look at the photo suggests NO -- CRUSH IT - NO second chances - do you want to be driving down the road and get hit by the "driver" / of that car - he /she has NO control over a car in that state...............

You have to ask...

...why would there be no steering wheel? Most probably, the car has been stolen at some point and the wheel and steering lock removed to facilitate this. Anyone found driving such a vehicle should be banned for a year and the car should be crushed, whether it is regoed, WOFed or not.(I'd go further than The Caveman here...) This is stupidity crossing a line that puts others at risk and we should make it clear that it won't be tolerated. If it is made clear that damaging a car in this way means you can't use it, it makes stealing it in the first place pointless.
