Rotorua teams looking likely

Rotorua Maroon remains the only unbeaten team at the 2011 Tai Mitchell Primary Schools Rugby tournament being played in Edgecumbe.

After the double round on Super Sunday, the Rotorua Maroon side now wears the ‘favourites' mantel after two big wins on day three.

In the morning round they overcame a determined challenge from last year's runner-up, Tauranga East, to win 33-nil, then ran over Apanui in the afternoon encounter.

Tauranga West, which was narrowly beaten by Rotorua Gold in the opening game on day one, also showed that they are serious contenders on Super Sunday.

First up they galloped away from Rotorua Gold 83-nil, then defeated Te Puke 55-5 in their afternoon game.

In spite of being beaten by the Tauranga side, Te Puke is looking like they will be semi-final contenders. In their morning match, Te Puke impressed when it provided Whakatane with its first defeat of the tournament, winning 60-5.

The closest game on day three was the early morning match-up between Opotiki and Rangitaiki, which finished in a 5 all draw.
