Resuming civic heart progress

Tauranga city Council's approach to planning its new administration building is going to change from next Tuesday, December 20, when the first decisions are made about the way forward for the new council.

The new City Transformation Committee's chairman Larry Baldock says first up there will be a bit of a rethink and analysis on the state of the other council buildings in the city precinct.

It's accepted the administration building fronting Willow St is to be demolished, but there will be another look at the library and the corner building.

'I think there's a general view among the elected members that we are going to be taking a fresh look at some of it, seeing what becomes what and what is placed where,” says Larry.

'I think issues around the museum are still surfacing. The location of the museum is still far from settled. 'When you look at what they came up with – four buildings, including the museum and the library – that meant you had a pretty crowded square.

'We are going to try and sort that out as early as we can what the locations will be.

'It's crazy to go ahead with feasibility studies when you still have two sites, because then you start duplicating everything. We should get that settled,” says Larry.

The buses are another issue yet to be discussed and decided. The bus tops will have to be moved from Willow St because of the demolition of the administration building. It was suggested in the workshop the bus stops be moved to Durham St, but no-one yet knows where in Durham St that will be, says Larry.

'The decision that the previous council made before was that by December there would be a report from staff that would touch on the issues. To a large extent we're going through that,” says Larry.

The workshop also involved a bit of a debrief from councillors who were part of the process up to the election and from councillors that had observed the process from the outside.

'We discussed what we saw had gone wrong and how we should do it better in future,” says Larry.

WHY is the old building not good enough, im sure refurbishment could come into play, gosh 4 weekends ago they had people washing the outside of it, how much did this cost, also why are they putting huge foot path on welcome bay side ofthe over bridge over by polytech, what a waste of money, (has someone in TCC have a interest in the contractors on sight) just wondering, how many times do see people walkig or biking in this part, NOT MANY, my Tuppence worth,No1 Thankyou, 10-4 out,

Have the people agreed to build a Museum. I don't remember that?I do however remember how we kick a few councilors to touch last time.Shame we have to go thru all that again. Some people just don't listen I guess. There are more people in Tauranga who don't want a Museum that do.

Yes I have seen the work and imagine its going to be a cycle track which will probably link up with another new developing one in the area. You dont see people using that area because who really wants to cycle on the highway. It will get used once its in.

Just what we need

I asked around all my friends and colleagues what Tauranga needs to revitalise the city, and every one of them said "new administration offices for council!!". Not.

But what exactly have you said? By storys end, Im left wondering about all you were quoted on, as I gain no confidence on what lies ahead. Lots of airy fresh look, what and where, what went wrong/we should do better comments make me very nervous, with my stomach churning waiting to be hit with yet another hefty rate rise ahead. And what was that bit about the museum sneaked in there?? Since when was that an accepted fact that it will happen? Im not against a museum, but at the right time. But it will all turn out OK, I see at least 2 new staff being advertised for today! A Project Co-ordinator and Committee Advisor no less. Time ratepayers had input on how many staff Council actually needs. More staff = more rates. Not a good look for new council.

No surprises there

we (ratepayers) are going to be seriously shafted again in the building of the new Palace for the "seat warmers", but who said there WILL be a museum at all?...when was this decided and other details please...I have no problem whatsoever with the idea of a museum..but not at ratepayers expense..AGAIN!!.....I'm sure, no. I know, we have been over this many, many times..
