Holiday traffic crawls into Tauranga

We had it before Christmas, and now the holiday traffic appears to have returned in the lead-up to New Year's.

Yesterday a caller to the SunLive newsroom remarked on how heavy the Tauranga-bound traffic was from Katikati, and again today it appears equally bad, with traffic slowed to a crawl out of Katikati.

Another caller today on her way back from Whitianga says traffic has been slow all day, chiefly due to an increased number of cyclists on the road.

She says they're difficult to pass, and rarely pull over for traffic.

Meanwhile, the holiday period road toll is currently equal to that of last year, sitting at 12.

National Road Policing Manager Superintendent Steve Greally says police are extremely disappointed with the number of fatal crashes.

'While these crashes are all under investigation and it is too early to speculate on causes, I can say with some confidence they were all avoidable.”

Of significance, a third of the fatalities so far have been motorcyclists.

'Every time you approach a car - or motorbike - with keys in your hands, you need to be aware that your decisions affect more than just yourself.”

The official holiday road toll period ends at 6am Wednesday January 6, 2017.

cyclists

yes I've seen the cyclist problem too, on the narrow twisty Coromandel roads. Ponces using the highway system as their own personal exercise arena. Far from reducing congestion and potential for accidents, they are creating them. Not commuting cyclists or travelling cyclists -- those who treat the roads as their riding circuit. I like tennis for exercise, maybe my mates and I should hold up SH2 for half an hour while we play a set across the white line. cmon cyclists, use some commonsense and stay off the congested roads at this time of the year. Or go to a bike track. Or at least learn to pull off when you've got umpteen vehicles backed up on a hill.

The cyclists you refer to are just pig-ignorant idiots full of their own excrement. I saw a bunch on the harbour bridge cycling towards Tauranga when a car wanted to turn off at Dive Crescent. The person had to stop in the left-hand lane to let them pass which nearly caused a big crash as the following cars had to dodge the stopped car. They're all around Papamoa, the Mount and Tauranga. It's a wonder no-one has been killed on Whakamarama Road. It's called Obstructing Traffic. As for all the JAFFA's escaping their sorry existence and coming down here and clogging up our roads, just go home! They've gone from one traffic jam and caused another. It took me over an hour to get to Tauranga from Plummer's Point. I reckon they should build a great big wall right around Auckland. Then fill the it with water.
