Phelan Cup: finals time

The Seeka KI Western Bay of Plenty season will wind up this Saturday with the final of the Phelan Cup.

Two contrasting club histories will accompany Katikati and Papamoa when they endeavour to lift aloft the Phelan Cup in triumph on Saturday afternoon.

Katikati is amongst the oldest rugby clubs in the country celebrating their 130th year last season whilst Papamoa were the last Western Bay of Plenty club to be admitted to full membership of the WBOP Rugby Sub-Union.

In a Seeka KI Western BOP season of red-hot action, both teams will be chasing their first piece of silverware in the 2011 season.

The season has been highly competitive with the Hardy Rosebowl (Western BOP Challenge Trophy) changing hands five times, showing that reputations mattered for little as upsets abounded during the rugby year.

The major prize of the Combined Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the Western BOP Championship, was taken out by Matakana Island.

In a final that went down to the wire, Matakana got past Mount Maunganui in the dying moments of the final to post a 30-26 victory.

Mount Maunganui won the Gilbey Cup, which is awarded to the team with the most points from the Championship round robin competition – as well as winning the round two top four group which played for the Merv Scholes Trophy.

The real success story of the local second tier competitions was the introduction of the Hardy Rosebowl Challenge Trophy that went on the line each week.

Matakana Island took the challenge prize from Judea on the season opening day. The Island side held the Rosebowl for six weeks before Arataki relieved them of the prize.

In what was the biggest upset of the season, Eastern Districts took the Hardy Rosebowl into the Phelan Cup competition when they defeated Arataki.

The ED tenure was brief losing the prize to Judea in their first defence. The Hardy Rosebowl has gone full circle back to where it all started, with Judea taking the challenge trophy into the summer recess, after four successive victories.
