Sports finishes top of the table

The Bartercard Baywide premier semi-finalists and its ‘wooden-spooner' are known after the last round of the regular season was completed at the weekend.

Te Puna had to come from a halftime deficit, being down 11-15 against Whakatane Marist, in the relegation battle at Maramatanga Park.

The blue and black brigade ran in three second half tries to take out the match 28-15 with Daniel Schuster, Chad Tuoro, Tapene Mika and Whanarau Peita picking up a try apiece.

The game that had implications for both sides, means that Te Puna will continue to play in the Baywide top echelon next season – while Whakatane Marist is relegated to division one

While defending champion Tauranga Sports emerged as the top qualifier, and booked a home semi-final, they were given a real wakeup call when defeated by Rotoiti at Emery Park.

A 10-6 lead to Tauranga Sports at the break disappeared in the second spell with Rotoiti coming back to take the encounter 19-10.

Te Puke Sports, which finished second on the final points tally, were involved in a tight contest in the first half leading Opotiki by just three points at 10-7. However, the visitors to the Eastern Bay cut loose in the second spell to take out the encounter 29-14.

The Te Puke points came from a penalty try and touchdowns to Andrew Tuise, John Corbett and Craig Donovan, with Nick McCashin adding nine points with his boot.

Te Amo Wilbore continued his season try scoring spree with a five pointer, with Reece Simpson grabbing his team's second touchdown.

Mount Maunganui re-inked its top four credentials when they got past fellow Western Bay rival Rangataua 27-8. The home side had a narrow five-point advantage at the break before running in two further tries in the second spell. Mount mentor Marty Bourke showed he had loss none of his skills with a try, with Tutere Waenga and Malakai Kisina also touching the ball down.

Whakarewarewa ace goal kicker Kelly Haimoana was in outstanding form posting 21 points from a try, five conversions and two penalty goals – as his side defeated Waikite 41-12.

The weekend results see Tauranga Sports host Whakarewarewa in Tauranga in one semi-final, with Mount Maunganui travelling to Murray Salt Stadium to play Te Puke Sports.

The division one match-up at Moore Park in Katikati between the home side and Te Teko, saw both teams book semi-final berths. While Te Teko defeated Katikati 12-8 they finished as top qualifier – with the Marist St Michaels 28-11 defeat to Ngongotaha, meaning that Katikati were handed the final post section place.

Greerton Marist will host the second semi after running away from Paroa 65-7, with Kahukura winning a battle of attrition against 19-11 Ruatoki, who are headed for local rugby next season after finishing with the wooden spoon.

The colts final will be fought out between defending champions Te Puke Sports and Greerton Marist after semi-final results were posted. Te Puke Sports had to dig deep to get past Te Puna 27-20, with Greerton Marist also given a real contest by Tauranga Sports, before Greerton emerged with a 22-14 victory.

In the division two playoffs, where the victor wins promotion to div one next season, Arataki posted 38 unanswered points to defeat Murupara, Galatea defeated Matakana Island on the Island, with Poroporo Red running away from Eastern Pirates 50-5.
